I first
became interested in dogs, when as a
youngster, I saw my St. Bernard spring
between the family cat and a rattlesnake
ready to strike on her cheek as she pushed
the cat away from the danger zone. Only the
quick administration of anti-venom coupled
with round the clock care managed to save
the dog's life. Following this occurrence, I
was hooked on dogs. My beloved St Bernard
died while I was in Italy with the Fifteenth
Air Force, and upon my return, I became
involved with Boxers and Great Danes.
Six years
on the Board of Directors of the Boxer Club
of Long Island, including four terms as
president was followed by fifteen years on
the Board of Directors of The Great Dane
Club of America, including five terms as
President and eight years on the Board of
Palm Beach County Dog Fanciers including six
terms as president. During this time, I was
a delegate to the American Kennel Club for
twelve years.
As
Attorney for Westbury, New York (Long
Island), it became my duty to write "Dog
Ordinances" designed to reduce the
complaints about nuisance dogs and dogs
running at large. This legislation was
quickly adopted and accomplished its
purpose. Thereafter, it was copied and
adopted by many municipalities throughout
the country.
In 1977,
a number of essays, based upon my
experiences as a dog show exhibitor and than
as a judge, won the Dog Writers' Association
of America Award for the Best Series in a
Multi-Breed magazine. The
challenge posed by judging dogs coupled with
the extreme satisfaction of associating with
dogs has resulted in my spending most of my
free time in pursuit of this most
pleasurable hobby.
